Eric Lefkofsky and his Company, Tempus

According to the article written by Barb Darrow, “This Is What’s Missing in the Data-Centric Approach to Cancer”, about Eric Lefkofsky, the co-founder of the company Tempus, doctors need more data to properly treat cancer. There is a place in which data isn’t being used, and that is every day treatments of cancer patients. Lefkofsky’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and he was overwhelmed by the realization that the oncologist wasn’t being given the comparative information from one patient to the next.

Mr Lefkofsky thought it was important for doctors and researchers to have this information available to them for analysis. So, he came up with the idea for Tempus. A data driven company that would take the medical records of all the patients, clean them up, by taking all the personal information away, and giving the information back to the doctors and researchers to be analyzed. Through the comparative analyzation of each patient, their medical issues, medications, and result of treatment the doctors could better predict the outcome of their future patients.

Attaining his law degree from the University of Michigan, Lefkofsky, started his first business in 1994 with his business partner, Bradley Keywell. They borrowed money and bought Brandon Apparel, which didn’t do well and gave them legal problems for quite some time. In 1999 they founded, Starbelly, an internet company specializing in promotional products. This time they were successful and sold the company for $240 million. Lefkofsky would co-found many other successful companies, such as, Tempus, Lightbank, InnerWorkings, Uptake Technologies, Groupon, Echo Global Logistics, and Mediaocean.

Lefkofsky and his wife, Liz, are involved in charitable activities too. They established a private foundation called, the Lefkofsky Family Foundation, where they choose to contribute to causes in art and culture, education, human rights, medical research, and health care. They tend to enjoy contributing to the community they live, the Chicago area, but they want to see their efforts felt in the global community as well.
